Messner: 40 years ago on Everest alone

On 20 August 1980, Reinhold Messner single-handedly reached the 8848-metre-high summit of Mount Everest, having conquered it two years earlier with the Tyrolean Peter Habeler without additional oxygen. Doctors had previously warned that a person could not survive at this altitude without additional oxygen, and even fellow climbers gave the plan little chance of success.

On the way to Everest, Messner slipped into a crevasse – alone and unsecured. In the seemingly hopeless situation and darkness of the crevasse, it became clear to him: “If I get out of this, I’ll leave it. He was actually able to free himself and yet continued to climb.

At the top there were new worries: the monsoon was driving up fog. “I was afraid that if it started snowing, I wouldn’t be able to find my way down – I was dependent on my track. In the huge white areas, orientation is impossible in the fog. Half running, half sliding, it reached lower altitudes – the fog lifted. “I was really very lucky.” (Source: ORF Tyrol)
