The title White Field is a reference to the Celtic origin of the name Vintl (South Tyrol), which means "white field". The work begins with a sweeping first part introducing the fanfare-like main theme. In the lyrical middle part the impressive and legendary mountain world around the Vandoies is described. In the following final part the main theme of the first part is taken up again, before the work ends in a majestic conclusion.

Vintl is mentioned in documents around 994 AD as 'Vallis Vintula'. Celtic roots are used by name scholars to derive the name: Vindoiàlo 'Field of Vindos' or 'White Field' (similar names exist in Friuli: Vendoglio, in France: Vendeuil). Since some place names in the municipality have Romanesque origins, it can be assumed that before the arrival of the Bavarian settlers in the 7th century A.D. even more remote places in the Pfunder valley were inhabited.
