The Austrian Brass Band Youth awarded five commissioned compositions for the 5th Austrian Youth Wind Orchestra Competition, which took place in Linz in October 2011. The commission for a work in the DJ level went to Armin Kofler and thus Schmelzende Riesen was created. The idea behind the title and the work is global warming, which is also noticeable in Central Europe, not least through the retreat of the alpine glaciers.

The work begins with a quiet, majestic part that reflects the majesty of the glaciers. The fast middle section describes the exciting ride with a team of sledge dogs across the expanses of the Arctic. The transition to the last part is abrupt. The extent of climate change suddenly becomes apparent. This is followed by a kind of "lamentation" of the glaciers, which only fades into a more optimistic tone at the end of the work with the hope of a better future through future generations.

They are gigantic: glaciers penetrate the landscape with enormous force. But as impressive as they are, their end is in sight. Climate change is causing glaciers to retreat dramatically worldwide. When glaciers thaw, the landscape changes. Former glacial valleys are transformed into barren rock deserts in which only a few living creatures feel at home. The reason for this lies in the scarcity of water: streams of melt water once supplied plants. It was able to form soil in the peripheral areas of the ice, which in turn made plant growth possible and thus created habitat for many small animals.

If the glaciers disappear, some of the species will also disappear. However, rising temperatures also have a fatal effect on the geology of the Alps. This is because the permanently frozen soil of the Alps becomes unstable. Landslides and downhills are the result.

Such events not only change the image of the Alps, but are also extremely dangerous for people, as mountain huts and ski lifts, for example, which used to stand firmly on permanently icy ground, start to slip.
